ALPINE VALLEY REGION OF ENGADINE, SWITZERLAND - 5 DAY WORKSHOP

WITH THE ALPA ACADEMY

JUNE 1st to JUNE 7th, 2025

£3,395 Per Person

* 6 SPACES REMAINING *

Join me for a five day masterclass on landscape photography, in the stunning Engadine region of Switzerland.

Our home for the week will be the Hotel Weisses Kreuz, in the historic village of Bergün.

I’ll be joined by Hans Keist (ALPA owner & CEO) who will be bringing a variety of ALPA cameras, lenses and accessories with him, for anyone to try out if they so wish.

Please note - You don’t have to own an ALPA to attend. The ALPA Academy welcomes all photographers.

BESPOKE LEARNING

I generally prefer to work with small groups whenever possible, hence our group being for six participants only.

This approach simply provides a far more focused, intimate and memorable experience.

Participants benefit greatly by having more quality time and more physical space, with which to work in the landscape.

LOCATIONS

Over the course of the five-days we will take you to a wonderfully varied mix of locations.

These will include Lake Palpuogna, Cascada da Bernina and the Glacier Morteratsch, to name but a few.

There will also be time spent making pictures in Bergün itself, focusing on its fascinating and unique architecture.

To get a feel for the locations, you can see more of the photographs that I made from my previous Engadine workshop, here.

DAILY MASTERCLASSES

We will have private use of the hotel’s library, where I will be running daily master classes on many aspects of landscape photography.

Broadly speaking I'll discuss and explore the Art, Craft, Process and Mindset of landscape photography.

1/ Introduction talk - 'A journey into landscape photography'  I talk about my career as a professional advertising photographer and how this lead to my passion for landscape photography.

2/ 'My approach to landscape photography' I explain my approach to landscape photography, from both a technical and psychological point of view.

3/ ‘Light, composition and filters' I discuss the use of light and composition and illustrate my use of filters. In particular the use of ‘on camera’ neutral density (ND) grads.

4/ 'Inspiration' One of my favourite topics. I talk about the work that has inspired me over the years and delve in to a broader discussion of inspiration.

5/ 'Creating panoramic landscapes' I explain my approach to panoramic work, using shift, stitch and panning methods.

6/ 'Post production and printing' I demonstrate my approach and discuss my thought processes and techniques on post production and the final print.

THE VILLAGE OF BERGÜN

Our home for the week will be the beautiful and unspoilt village of Bergün, which lies at the foot of the Albula Pass at the gateway to the Engadine.

Surrounded by towering mountain views, and with it’s quiet pace of life, it really is a very special place.

With its picturesque houses, lavishly decorated with sgraffito, frescoes and oriel windows and its 800 year old Romanesque church and a Roman tower, it remains remarkably unchanged.

Bergün is also home to a fantastic bakery and coffee house!

WHAT’S INCLUDED
Tuition with Julian Calverley, breakfast, evening meal, single occupancy hotel accommodation and transport during the workshop.

WHAT’S EXCLUDED
Flights, insurance, transport to hotel and drinks.

THE ISLES OF SKYE AND HARRIS - 8 DAY WORKSHOP

WITH SANTA FE WORKSHOPS & THE ALPA ACADEMY

OCTOBER 25th to NOVEMBER 3rd, 2025

* ONLY 2 SPACES REMAINING *

“Set against the dramatic backdrops of the Isle of Skye and Isle of Harris in the Hebrides of Scotland, this photographic adventure with acclaimed British photographer Julian Calverley offers eight photographers the opportunity to advance their skills as landscape photographers in one of the world’s most breathtaking and varied settings during the stormy fall season. Remember, “bad weather” makes for good photographic opportunities!

In the far reaches of northern Scotland, two islands offer a photographer’s paradise of crystal-clear shallows, white sandy beaches, and turquoise waters paired with wild coastlines of pinnacles, high vertical cliffs, and soaring mountain tops. The Isle of Skye is the largest and northernmost of the major islands in the Inner Hebrides. It stretches 50 miles long and 25 miles wide. It is distinguished by the peaks of the Cuillin Mountains, the dramatic geology of the Old Man of Storr and The Quiraing, and an extraordinary series of peninsulas and bays. The Isle of Harris is best known for its magnificent beaches and dramatic weather. The photographic discoveries on both islands are boundless, around every curve in the road”

“Offering more than a simple photo tour, this nine-day journey takes advantage of Julian’s long experience as a landscape photographer and his technical expertise. Daily photo talks and group discussions led by Julian are coupled with frequent one-on-one sessions in the field and afterward when editing. Julian and his photographic assistant, Darren Ciolli-Leach, help create a workshop-like environment in a program that focuses on getting you to the best locations at the right time of day or night.

Broadly speaking, Julian discusses the mindset, art, and process of landscape photography. He discusses his photographic approach from both a technical and psychological point of view; Julian reviews his approach to composition and lighting always keeping his equipment choices as simple as possible; and his non-photographic influences that include art, writing, and music. Other topics of discussion include making panoramic landscapes using both the shift and panning methods; his use of filters including the all-important graduated neutral density filters; and his thought process and techniques for post-production which are informed by his years of shooting film and making ‘wet’ prints.

Be part of a select group of eight landscape photographers who join Julian and Darren for an unequaled photographic adventure to the wild reaches of the Hebrides of Scotland.

A virtual trip reunion in November 2025 will be organized by Santa Fe Workshops. Participants along with Julian and Santa Fe Workshops Director Reid Callanan will gather on Zoom to reconnect and enjoy an image presentation of each photographer’s best images from the trip”
